10, 2009, 8:28am PDT - The Jacksonville Rodeo (From Dina)
Well, last
night went great! Bess was ready and waiting on me when I
got there to pick her up....of course, she wasn't happy because
her pink shirt wasn't real clean and it was "Tough Enough
to Wear Pink"....but I took care of her and had stopped
and picked her a new one up.
We got to the rodeo about 7:15 and Bess
wouldn't let me park up at the front of the arena at the
handicap...heck no...we had to park in the pasture by the
trailers! So, I honored her request! The ground wasn't too
bad rough so she was able to maneuver her wheel chair around
just fine. We used one of the box seats that were empty
to sit in and it was right at the first barrel so she got
a great view of everyone running. She, of course, had to
critique everyone when running...it was the funniest thing!
Jason Taylor, our preacher from Bar None
Cowboy Church, did a quick sermon on the "5 Basic Steps"
to life...and compared it to riding bulls.....it was cool
how they just brought it right in after the last bull exited
the arena. After that, "Branded" came on stage
and sang for about an hour. They are an awesome Christian
Country group and very well worth seeing!
Bess and I didn't get back to her room until
12:45am or so, fed her and I left there about 1:15am! Yes,
it makes for a long Friday when you have to be at work the
next day because I didn't get in bed until 2:45am this morning!!!!
It was worth it though. She got to do something different
and visit with people in passing....looking forward to more
visits! Hopefully, one day, I can actually get her to a
barrel race towards Terrel or something when I know a lot
of people will be there and you guys can meet her personally!
She's a nut!
Hope everyone has a great weekend and be
safe in your travels!!

8, 2009, 1:23pm PDT - Bess is out of the hospital (From Dina)
Well, after
blood work, lots of antibiotics and all, Bess was finally
discharged from the hospital today about 11:45 or 12:00pm.
I talked to her and she felt fine...they finally got her fever
down and kept it down. She had some red/swelling area on her
leg from a little above her knee back up to her waist but
that is clearing up fine. She still had a slight UTI which
is pretty common but it's cleared up.
She is back in her "home" and
much better now! LOL I can remember the days when she would
have rather been at the hospital because they had better
food! Now, she missed the nursing home because she can get
outside there and run around in her chair!
Hopefully we have everything back on track
and on the downhill slide for a while!
If things go well, I will be taking her
to the Jacksonville Pro Rodeo tomorrow night. Branded--Gospel
music group will be performing after the rodeo and she really
liked them....also Jason Taylor (our preacher at Bar None)
will actually be preaching during this time as well.....so
we are going to go out and support putting God and prayer
back into anything we can! I think it's going to be awesome
and Bess is looking forward to it! Of course, I could tell
she was nervous because she kept saying "They won't
have a good place for me to sit" and all that! Told
her she didn't need to worry about all that!! We would get
her there and put her somewhere!!! Hopefully the plans will
go as we have them scheduled...and this is another one of
those "first time deals" for her so we'll have
to keep a watch on her!
Keep her in the prayers!!! Thank
you guys for everything! Hope you all have a great day!!

6, 2009, 2:58pm PDT - Update on Bess (From Dina)
Just talked
to the nurse at Henderson Memorial.....Bess does NOT show
any blood clots which is wonderful. They do call it cellulitis
as the area where she was receiving antibiotic shots for the
UTI is real red, irritated and feverish....so...they are pumping
her full of more antibiotics. She was running a fever of 101
and they gave her meds for that to bring that down.....she
still has a slight UTI but it's better than it was last week.
She will be staying overnight--even though she is not very
happy about it. I told the nurse to let her know I called
and she had to do what they told them to get well whether
she liked it or not! She is pretty cold and is piled full
of blankets right now but I'm sure the fever has something
to do with that.....asked her to give Bess some warm tea and
it always seemed to helped her--more so in the mind.....
I am going to call and check on her before
I call it a night and will continue to update...Just
keep lifting her in prayer!! And pray for those nurses also
as she can be "quite the patient" at times!! LOL
LOL LOL Hope everyone has a good evening!!

6, 2009, 10:41am PDT - Bess is in the hospital again (From
Dina) I
got a phone call from Mrs. Barbara this morning followed up
with an email that I have copied below. The nursing home called
about 3:30 this morning and they had to take Bess in to the
hospital. I know she was feeling good because I spent the
day with her yesterday. We went to Wal Mart and I let her
run around the store like a kid! It was funny! NEVER, NEVER,
NEVER take a woman to Wal Mart that hasn't been in about 6
months!! YOU WILL GO BROKE!! I Promise you!! LOL !! She saw
a lady in one of the electric carts there and she asked if
they wanted to race!! She was definitely full of it yesterday
that's for sure. We got back to her room about 4:30 and I
exercised her arms and stuff....made her really work on lifting
and all that. She doesn't have any mirrors in the room (because
she didn't really want to see herself for a long time) so
I took pictures of her moving and stuff....she was shocked
because she just can't tell how far up she's lifting or anything.
Anyway....the details are below from Mrs. Barbara. I'm going
to call and check on her in a few and I will send updates.....
PLEASE KEEP HER IN THE PRAYERS!!!!!
"I wanted to let ya’ll know that
Bess has been admitted to the hospital. I talked to the
nurse and she said they were going to be checking for a
blood clot. She said she has cellulitis in her upper leg,
but I know they have been giving her antibiotic shots in
her legs for the UT infection she got last week. She may
be having a reaction to a shot or shots. I put her on the
prayer list this morning. Wanted to let ya’ll know
about her. "

1, 2009, 7:45pm PDT - A Letter from Bess to Everyone
MESSAGE
FROM BESS CHANEY WITH DINA TYPING.....THESE ARE HER WORDS
TO EACH OF YOU!!! Hello
everyone!
I want
to tell all of you how happy I am to have received all the
cards, letters and help from my barrel racing family! All
the phone calls have been incredible and I am amazed at
those who call that don't even personally know me! I really
love the fact that I am able to see "Cody" on
a more regular basis! We are both happy to be "reunited"
again as he was always my little running buddy.
I get
really excited when I find out that people haven't forgotten
me because it has been over a year now since I have been
in the barrel racing world. (Note from Dina: Guys--she is
tearing up at this very moment!!!! I'm telling you! SHE
NEEDS US!!) and it really makes me feel good inside to know
I am loved.
I don't
get to see T-Bone (the gelding I ran) any and I miss that
because I spent a lot of time with him but everything happens
for a reason.
A special
THANK YOU to Heather Burris for painting an incredible oil
painting of me and TBone at a barrel race with a caption
that reads "God is Able" along the top! I will
have Dina post the picture on here for everyone to share!
IT IS AMAZING and I shed a few tears over it!
For
all of you.....THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
I love
you guys and couldn't do it without you!

1, 2009, 9:56am PDT - Bess is amazing... (From Dina)
I know
people probably get so tired of hearing me say this but Bess
is truly amazing! She has conquered sooo many challenges (just
like anyone else that has done so in her position). It truly
makes me realize that any problems with relationships, just
plain "I don't care", and anything else that may
put me in a bad mood, is REALLY NOT A BIG DEAL!
She NEVER stops trying! I think the turning
point was talking to the doctor in California...when he
told her she had all the signs in her favor to "retrain
her body." She has been going out 4-5 times a day which
she barely went out once....she's constantly working her
shoulders which has in turn allowed her to raise her arm
up quite a bit off the arm of the chair!
I love her and thank her for showing me
that the "smaller things in life" are soooo important!
She got on to me not too long ago for not riding. She said,
"Missy! You get your butt out there! You have 2 good
arms and 2 good legs! And one day that could be taken away
from you so GET OUT THERE AND DO WHAT YOU LOVE!" Man,
if that doesn't make you stop and think!!!!!!
To anyone reading this that may have disabilities....NEVER
GIVE UP!!! Keep on keeping on! It will pay off in the long
run!

1, 2009, 9:27am PDT - Bess
in the hospital...update
(From Dina) OK...I
wasn't able to get on with her last night for any period of
time....Bess was taken into the ER...they pulled blood and
all that good stuff....
She had another urinary tract infection....they
had moved her the other day and her line came out some...and
before they realized it, she had some fluids backed up.
Anyway...as a result, she started running fever, low blood
pressure and major headache.....they pumped her full of
antibiotics, gave her meds for her headache to ease the
pain, monitored her and sent her back to her "home"
the same night.
I talked to her this morning and she was
doing much, much better....headache eased up and all that.....
I will tell her people were asking about
her and praying for her! The UTI's are VERY common in spinal
cord injuries but we are soooo thankful we don't deal with
them any more often than we do...and when she gets one,
we are usually lucky to catch them early.
Thanks for all the prayers and continued
support for her! You just don't have a clue what it means
for her!!

30, 2009, 9:46am PDT - Bess in the hospital (From Dina)
I got an
email from Mrs. Barbara this morning....the nursing home called
and they have taken her into the ER in Henderson. She was
running a fever and her blood pressure was really low. I talked
to her last night but only briefly. She had a really bad headache
and it hurt her to talk. Besides, the tv was up loud and I
couldn't hear her well.
So....Mrs. Barbara is going by there in
a bit and will call me with any updates. I will keep you
posted!!

15, 2009, 12:01pm PDT - Baby Steps... (From Dina)
After a
long week working the Gladewater Rodeo, I went to church Sunday
with Bess & the Quinn's as normal. We took her to eat
lunch then back to her room. Well, let me tell you! I about
passed out! We were massaging her arms and such for a few
minutes and she said, "Hey, watch this." She took
a deep breath and raised her right arm up! She almost had
the whole arm, hand/fingers included up off the arm of the
chair!! WE WERE ALL GOING CRAZY! She did it several times
so this was no muscle spasm, accident or anything....just
the Good Lord working miracles that's all! Bess has now started
going outside more and more every day and she's really starting
to show the "Indian" in her! Man! Her arms and face
are soooo dark! But she feels better getting some sunlight!
I will keep posting updates as I come across
them! Until then....keep the prayers coming because they
are obviously working!!!! She may not be moving a whole
bunch but every little bit is a major milestone for her!!!!

22, 2009, 10:06am PDT - Dr. L's Latest Report On Bess (From
Dina) OK...we
didn't hear what we wanted but we didn't hear bad news either!!!
Dr.
L called us Wednesday night and said the following:
Bess's
neck is in near perfect alignment! He said she is fusing
wonderfully and the spinal column is completely open which
is wonderful news! He said the surgeons here did an outstanding
job on her neck and he saw nothing that he could do surgically
that could improve anything.
What
we did like hearing him say was that Bess has every condition
in her favor for her to really struggle and keep every aspect
of therapy going to retrain her body to gain functionality!!!!
He said since her cord wasn't severed, that was great news
(which we knew that). He said we all knew he couldn't say
"yes you will or no you won't walk again" but
what he could say was she has every possibility to do so
because all the conditions are outstanding to allow that!!
It was basically up to her now to push herself through and
go from there!
Sooooo....with
that being said.....we have to jump the track and see what
avenues we have on rehabilitation options for her! She gets
basic "range of motion" therapy which is better
than nothing but she needs high tech equipment and such
for her to get the rehab she needs!!!
We are
all open for options and ideas so feel free to let me know
if you have any ideas!
Please
keep her in your prayers!!!! We are fixing to battle a hard
road but we've made it over the bumps in the past!!! |

7, 2009, 2:52pm PDT - One Request...I'm begging! (From Dina)
Ok guys....I really need your help more than
ever!
Last night was an EXTREMELY tough night for Bess! We took
her to church then back to the nursing home. We visited
for a while and when we got ready to leave she finally broke
down and started crying really hard. All we could do was
hug her neck and listen. We let her talk and cry it out.
She informed us she was soooo tired of feeling weird. She
can't do anything! She didn't like it that she could wipe
her nose, wipe her rear or do ANYTHING! Always having to
depend on someone to take care of her!
I just ask that ANYONE that can call her at this time,
PLEASE DO SO!!!! Even if you don't know her! Just tell her
you saw the posts on her and was just wanting to make sure
she was doing good.....IT WILL LIFT HER UP SOOOOO MUCH!!
Her direct line is (903) 657-8176.
I usually try not to ask for much, but guys, this is soooo
crucial for her right now to have the support of friends.....keep
in mind, she is on a speaker phone and you will get feedback
from her tv....THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! - Dina

6, 2009, 7:40am PDT - Updates... (From Dina)
I finally got an email back from the doctor's
office in California....they did receive all of her cd records
and Dr. L will be in on Friday....we are hoping to have him
review those records at that time and hopefully by next week
sometime we will have a conference call with him!
Just
keep some really serious prayer action going that he can
call and tell us he sees some possible ways of helping her!!!!
I will let you know as I hear more!!!
